Who will help my kid catch up — for free?

Say the grade, the subject, what the school has said (a low test score, a retention warning, a 'progress monitoring plan'), and your county. In a few seconds you get the free supports that fit — from the school, the state, the library and the community — and the letter that asks the school for its plan. No account. Nothing stored.

Plan active

Free — takes 20 seconds

Your child and the struggle.

Grade, subject, what the school has told you (FAST scores, a retention letter, a progress-monitoring plan, a teacher's note), your county, and anything relevant — English as a second language, a suspected learning difference, a school that's Title I.

Free. Takes a few seconds.

Why this exists

'We're monitoring' is not a plan. Florida law says there has to be one — in writing.

A child behind in reading is owed intensive intervention and a written plan; a high-schooler who failed Algebra is owed retakes and remediation; the state funds tutoring accounts and the library pays for online tutors. The family that asks in writing gets it. This writes the ask and lists the free help.

How it works

Common questions

My child is behind in reading — what is the school actually required to do?

Under Fla. Stat. 1008.25, a K-3 student (and older students per district policy) with a substantial reading deficiency must get intensive reading intervention, and you must be notified in writing and given a read-at-home plan. If your child is a 3rd grader scoring at the lowest level on the state reading test, retention generally applies unless a good-cause exemption fits (alternative assessment, portfolio, ESOL with less than two years of instruction, certain ESE students, prior retention), and the district must offer a summer reading camp. This tool explains the requirement in plain language — confirm your child's actual data and plan with the school.

What is the New Worlds Reading Scholarship, and can my child get it?

It's a state-funded account (Fla. Stat. 1002.411) for eligible K-5 students with a reading deficiency, meant to pay for tutoring, materials and programs. You apply through the scholarship funding organization, not through this tool. There's also the separate New Worlds Reading Initiative, which mails free books to eligible K-5 students — check eligibility and how to apply with the program itself.

Is it really free? Is what I paste stored?

Yes — for a parent using it, Free Tutoring Finder FL is free, always, and the tool states that nothing you type is stored. The paid plans listed ($99/month for schools & libraries, $49/month for PTAs & churches) are subscriptions for organizations that want to run the tool for their community, not a cost to you.

How do I ask the school in writing for my child's plan?

A good letter is dated, names the student, grade and teacher, states your concern and any data you have, and asks for the current assessment data, the progress-monitoring or intervention plan (what, how often, by whom), the read-at-home plan, any tutoring or camp the school offers, and — if relevant — the EOC retake/remediation schedule or an ESE evaluation. Ask for a meeting and a written response by a stated date. The tool can help draft this letter, but it doesn't send it or track the school's response.

My child failed a test — will they be held back, and can they retake it?

Students who fail a required end-of-course exam like Algebra 1, or the grade-10 ELA assessment, get retake opportunities and remediation, and a qualifying SAT/ACT/PSAT concordant or comparative score can also satisfy the requirement (FDOE — Graduation requirements & assessments). For 3rd-grade reading retention specifically, several good-cause exemptions may apply. This tool cannot tell you your child's actual score or which exemption applies — confirm both with the school.
